One of the early respected citizens of the Mohican area was John Garst, who although not a banker, set up loans to people in the neighborhood and served as treasurer of the community in 1861. His grandson, whose name was also John, read some facts about the community at the Centennial homecoming in 1953. He said the town of Mohicanville was laid out in 1853 by Simean Beal and Henry Sherraden and by 1860 had reached a population of nearly 200. Water power was the main source of its popularity and at its height it had two churches, a schoolhouse, two physicians, three drygoods stores, a tavern, grist mill, woolen factory, tannery, blacksmith shop, grocery, three shoe shops, saddle and harness shop, a gunsmith, and a cooper." "OBITUARY "JOHN GARST. John Garst, one of the county's pioneers died at his home west of Mohicanville, Monday evening, after a week's illness, having been stricken with pneumonia. "Mr. Garst was in the 85th year of his age. He came to what is now Ashland county about 1840 and thus spent the greatest part of his life here. For many years he was a blacksmith in Mohcianville. He abandoned his trade to become a farmer. Mr. Garst was a shrewd business man and accumulated considerable wealth. He was one of the county's sturdiest and most substantial citizens and numbered his friends in Mohican and adjoining townships, by the hundred. Mr.Garst was a prominent Democrat. "Mr. Garst's wife died four or five years ago. Six children, all residents of Ashland county, remain: George Garst, Mrs. Peter Helbert, Mrs. Elmer Paullin, Mrs. James Welsh, Mrs. Geo. Maurer, and Mrs. George Glasener. "Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 o'clock. Interment in Mohican." "OBITUARY--A gloom was cast over this community when it was announced that father John Garst had passed away on Monday evening, November 21. Mr. Garst was born in_Zwelbricken, province Luxemburg, kingdom of Barvaria, on the 6th day of November, 1820 and was 64 (84?) years and 15 days of age. He came to America with his parents And other relatives in February,_1831. Shortly after their arrival, both his parents died in New York thus leaving him an orphan at an early age. With others of the family he went to Bethleham, Pa., and in 1836 came to Ohio and located at Jeromeville. While living there he was catechized and confirmed as a member of the Meng congregation under the pastorate of Rev. Kuhnert. In 1840 Mr. Garst came to Mohican where he lived continuously to the time of his death, more than 64 years. He was married twice. To the first union were born four (three?) sons and four daughters, to the second were born three daughters. His second wife preceded him in death about five years. There remain to mourn their loss seven children, thirty-two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends. By occupation Mr. Garst was a blacksmith. Noted for his industry, the ring of his anvil could be heard early and late. His good work and kindly disposition brought him many customers and he never turned one away even when he knew the man was too poor to pay. The death of such men is not only a loss to family and friends, but to the whole community. He was widely known and greatly respected by everyone. We knew him from our childhood and our pen fails to portray our feelings. Father Garst did not have the advantage of education possessed by the youth of the present generation, but his common sense and excellent business judgment enabled him to accumulate a competency of this world's goods. But he did not live for this world alone. His charity, his liberal contributions to churches and other good causes was of that practical religion mentioned by the apostle in James 27 and in addition to this his word of admonition to the younger man was always on the side of right and honor. His mind was clear to the last and he died calm and resigned. He leaves a competency to his children but what is a far greater value he leaves to them at priceless boon a spotless reputation. Funeral services were held at the German Reformed Church in Mohican. Thursday, Rev. Kugler of Mohican assisted by Rev. Billings of McZena officiating. Interment in Mohican cemetery. S. Bee." "GARST HOME ON NATIONAL REGISTER--Loudonville-- The John Garst House on Ohio 95 one-quarter mile west of Mohicanville, has been added to the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places. "A well-preserved example of rural Italianate architecture, the house was built by John Garst about 1870. Garst was born in 1820 in Alsace, France. When he was 11, his family settled in Pennsylvania but his parents died soon after from an epidemic of cholera. "At age 15, Garst arrived in nearby Jeromesville where he served as a blacksmith's apprentice. He soon moved to Mohicanville where he remained active in the trade and eventually opened his own shop. "Garst prospered and branched out into other enterprises including a private banking business which concentrated in real estate. He was also active in local politics and held various township offices. He acquired 25 acres west of Mohicanville in 1850 and moved into a small Greek Revival house on the property. Eventually Garst was able to extend his farm to over 600 acres and construct the elaborate Italianate residence. "Presently owned by Bill and Micky Guisinger, who have restored the house, the property with the historic designation includes a barn and a corn crib. "The National Register nomination was prepared by Steven McQuillin, former regional preservation officer for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, a division of the Ohio Historical Society. "The John Garst House was nominated for designation as an historic place as part of an ongoing program of the Ohio Historical Society to identify sites in Ohio that qualify for the National Register. All nominations are reviewed and approved by the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board and by the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation of the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. "Designed to focus public attention on important landmarks and to help promote their preservation, the National Register is the nation's official list of significant historic, architectural, archaeological and cultural sites. Listing in the National Register does not alter ownership rights or administrative responsibility for the sites." History of Ashland County, Ohio: by A. J. Baughman, Largo, Florida, pg 548, born in 1820 in Alsace France, sailed to New York with his parents at age 11. Parents of John Garst first settled in Pennsylvania, but both parents died in the metropolis of cholera a few days after their arrival in the new world. The five children continued the journey to the Keystone state, making their way to the home of friends who had previously resided in the same locality with them in the fatherland. John GARST arrived in Jeromeville, Ashland, Ohio when about 14 years old, learned the trade of blacksmithing, moved to Mohicanville, where he died at 84 years of age in 1904.
