<b>History of Ashland County, Ohio:</b> by A. J. Baughman, Largo, Florida, pg 548, born in 1820 in Alsace France, sailed to New York with his parents at age 11. Parents of John Garst first settled in Pennsylvania, but both parents died in the metropolis of cholera a few days after their arrival in the new world. The five children continued the journey to the Keystone state, making their way to the home of friends who had previously resided in the same locality with them in the fatherland.
John GARST arrived in Jeromeville, Ashland, Ohio when about 14 years old, learned the trade of blacksmithing, moved to Mohicanville, where he died at 84 years of age in 1904. Pg 605 states John GARST, born in 1820 in Alsace France, came with his parents when 10 years of age to Westmoreland County, New York. He moved to Ohio when about 16 and was arrived in Mohicanville.

John is son of Johann Nickel Gerst and Anna Elisabetha Kuntz. He was born in Alsace-Lorraine, which could have been in Germany - his baptism Nov. 12, 1824 is said to have been in Rieschweiler, Pfalz. Rebecca is daughter of Jacob Helbert (1794-1884) and wife Elizabeth Mock (1792-1872, m. 1817 in Chester Co., PA) {See Baughman's 1909 "History of Ashland County, Ohio" which (p. 548-549) states she died at age 42 in 1862 and which (p. 606) gives her middle initial, A.
