  John W. Smith, 86, died at his home in Delta at 8 a.m. Sunday, a result of a stroke of Jan. 7. Funeral service was Tuesday in the Delta Methodist Church. Burial was in Garrett Cemetery.
  John Wood Smith, son of Marshall and Louisa Fansher Smith, was born October 28, 1869, at Olivet, Iowa.
  He was one of nine children and most of his life was spent in Mahaska and Keokuk counties. Having retired from the farm 13 years ago, he moved into Delta, where he spent the remaining years of his life.
  He was married to Celia I. Perfect on Feb. 17, 1901, and they became the parents of three sons and one daughter.
  He is survived by his wife; the daughter, now Mrs. Hazel Sheehy of Springville; and the sons, Paul of Olympia, Wash., Alva, of Long Beach, Calif., and Ernest of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Myrtle Clark of McKenna, Wash., and Maude Kisor of Hale Center, Texas; two brothers, Onis F. of Puyallup, Wash., and T. M. of Olympia, Wash.
  Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
