Notes
a. Note:   heir married life. They lived for a short time on 4th Street and on Bond Street in Saginaw until they bought their home on 9th. in about 1942.
Joey co-owned the James Tavern with his brother Bob. After Bob passed away he rented the building from his sister-in-law Vera for several years. Later he purchased the building from her, bought the land next door, tore down the old bar as the building was in really bad shape and built a new bar. This was about 1959. It was a small neighborhood bar and a sports bar and was known as the Joey James Tavern or by friends and patrons as the Atwater Athletic Club. It was located on the corner of Atwater and Warren in Saginaw, MI.
Joey was a basketball player at Saginaw High School. He loved most sports including, baseball, football, handball and wrestling. He coached and sponsored boys baseball teams. His team was called the Jays and they won many trophies. In 2008 Joey was inducted posthumously into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame.
Joey and several of his siblings had rheumatic fever as children and ended up with heart problems as a result of it. He also had diabetes as did his mother. He passed away of a heart attack at age 60. Heart disease was a complication of the diabetes.
He had gone to Henry Ford hospital in Detroit, MI the summer before he died to see about having some veins rerouted in his legs to improve circulation. He was told that every vein and artery in his body was plugged and that he only had about 6 months to live. Of course at that time they didn't do by-passes or open heart surgeries. He did have some medication for his diabetes but it wasn't injectable insulin and I never remember him checking his sugar levels at home. Medicine has come a long way since the 1960's.
Note:   Joey and Marie lived at 644 S. 9th Street, Saginaw, MI, 48601 most of t
