Note: ane was the first) of Thomas and Elizabeth (Williams) James. His father was killed in a coal mining accident when he was 6 months old. His mother later remarried to Hugh Williams. Together they had a daughter Margaret Williams. Edward's mother died when he was 10 years old. His step-father remarried to Mary (Davis) Jones. She had several children from her previous marriage and she and Hugh had several children. Together they raised all these children. Edward said that they treated them all the same and were good parents to them. Hugh and Elizabeth had lived in Ohio for a few years and that is where she died. Hugh moved back to Johnstown, PA when he married Mary. At some point Jasper Green came to Johnstown from Ohio, probably through the railroad as he worked for the railroad and married Edward's sister Mary Jane. They went back to Ohio where Jasper was from which was very close to where Hugh and Elizabeth had lived. It makes me wonder if Jasper didn't meet Mary Jane before Hugh moved back to PA as she would have been about 15 then. After Edward was of age he went to Ohio where his sister lived and met Elizabeth Stephenson. Elizabeth's family had also originally immigrated from England to Johnstown, PA and then moved to Stark County, OH. These were coal mining people who moved with the available work. Edward and Elizabeth were married in Cleveland , Ohio and lived there for a short time before moving to Stark County, OH and Coshocton County, OH. When they were first married he owned a business. I think it may have been a store. He sold it and his brother-in-law Jasper Green talked him into putting his money into mining stock and he lost it. So Edward ended up going back to the coal mines to work as he had done in PA. Edward and Elizabeth had eight of their children in Ohio and buried one son, Edward there. Elizabeth's mother died in 1901. In 1902 they moved to St. Charles, MI where he worked in coal mines and then a few years later to Buena Vista, MI where they lived on Holland Avenue and then to Saginaw, MI where they lived on the corner of Phelon and Alger on Saginaw's east side. Both houses have been since torn down. In 1929 they moved to Flint, MI. We know this from his obituary in the Saginaw News April 22, 1937 page 29.
