a. Note:   A Baltimore Co. marriage license was issued to James Francis and Sarah Chance on 9 July 1811. The death certificate of James's daughter Jane Matilda Mullen, lists her mother as Matilda Chance. These may or may not refer to the same person. Because no wife is listed in the land 1848 land transaction, the 1850 census, or the 1856 land transaction, it seems that James's wife died before 1848, and he probably did not remarry before his 1858 death.
