a. Note:   He settled in the north part of Preston (now Griswold) about two miles from his brother Jonathan, and the place has been owned and occupied by the family ever since. According to the records, his father deeded to Joseph another tract of land in the town of Preston, 23 Feb 1707. He lived on his farm until his death. He was a man often called upon to act as arbited in disputed cases, and also on committees on behalf of the town.
