Note: 1900 Census incorrectly lists him as Walter J. Russell (b. 1875) in Clear Creek, Mecklenburg Co., NC. listed as a farmer with Pearle b. Jan 1880 & daughter Zelia b. May 1899 1910 Census Mecklenburg Co., Charlotte, 1st Ward James W. Russell b. 1875, Iron moulder in Foundry Pearle Russell Zelia Russell b. 1899 Blandena b. 1903 James Walter's from his 2nd marriage to Nellie Dixson son said that his father had lived in Norfolk, Va. for awhile. The only time I can figure is between these two censuses. If he did go to Norfolk, it was probably to train to make iron moulds and it was probably only for a year or two. In 1913 he and Pearl filed for divorce in Charlotte. James Walter Russell was born in 1875 in Union Co., North Carolina as the third of thirteen children born to James M. Russell and Margaret Beaver (see Russell lineage). James M. was a farmer and had a saw mill. He moved in 1908 to a house he cut and sawed the lumber for, although it was originally intended for a member of the Dixon family. James M. died Jan. 14, 1924 and Margaret Aug. 14, 1916. The farmhouse in the Crab Orchard district of Mecklenburg Co. (near Newell, on the outskirts of Charlotte), was left to his son John and his family. In the 1920 census John, Sallie and Mamie still lived with their father. George and his family lived nearby. The farm was small, raising a few hogs, chickens and vegetables. The whole family got together each Thanksgiving or Christmas every year during the '20s. That was a big gathering. The only one not to attend was David William and his family. James Walter Russell grew up in Union Co. and married Pearl Polk in 1898, before his father and younger siblings moved to Newell. He and his wife lived in Clear Creek District of Mecklenburg Co. across the county live from where he grew up. Before 1910 they moved to the city of Charlotte where he worked at the foundry making iron moulds. He and Pearle divorced and he married Nellie Mae Dixson April 22, 1918. They lived on Clement Av. in Charlotte. April 22, 1920 they had their only child, James Llewellyn.
