Brewer; 1937; dtd 17 July, Ashland Daily Independent KY; pg 37;NOTE: 78?, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Snoddy (nee Amy Brewer)of Westwood, Thursday evening, after an illness of several weeks. He had been in failing health for the past two years and his death, while not unexpected, came as a shock to his family and friends. Mr. Brewer was born near Logan, W.Va., December 2, 1858, the son of the late Lewis Brewer, Sr., and Rebecca Marcum Brewer, who came to Boyd county during the Civil War and it was on a part of this original farm that Mr. Brewer lived. He was well known in and around Ashland where he had spent a useful and constructive life. In July 1884, he was married to Miss Emma Wheatley, who preceded him in death eight years ago. He was a member of the Pollard Baptist Church, of the Masonic Orders and a charter member of The Ideal? Carpenters' Union. He is survived by one son, Albert Brewer of Ironton; three daughters, Mrs. C.W. Keys of Mentor, Ohio; Mrs. Ben Snoddy and Mrs. John Jayne of Ashland, one son Robert Brewer, preceded him in death. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren; one brother, Richard Brewer, Parkersburg, W.Va., and one sister, Mrs. Nell Howell, New Straitsville, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the Pollard Baptish Church today at four p.m. and will be conducted by Rev. W.C. Pierce of Catlettsburg. Burial will follow in the family lot in Ashland cemetery. My maternal grandfather, William P. Brewer, wrote the following letter at age 25 to his father Lewis Brewer. William P. Brewer was born December 2, 1858. This letter is dated February 19, 1883 and is exactly as written. The original has been given to my nephew Timothy Keys. Shawne Perry County, Ohio February 19,1883 Dear Father I take the pleasure of drafing you a few lines to let you know that I am well hoping this will find you all well father I have just got a letter from Betty She says Ace tanner wants to by my horse he offers 75 dollar I wont take that for him if he will give me $90 dollars for him $50 down and the rest a gain the first of next december and Marrion Buckley for Security you sell him if not you keep the horse and use him yourself till I come home but don’t let no one else use him I wont be home for too or thre monts yet and maybe not then now don’t Sell the horse for less than 90 dollars work is schrce just now but will be better soon I just got too days and a half last month I made 15 dollars in the 2 ½ day I am stay at Johns they are all well at present if you don’t Sell the horse keep him and make dick and jake tend you a good crop of corn if you Sell him keep the money till I come home if I never get there you keep and do as you pleas with it write Soon and let me no if you Sell.
