a. Note:   An 1870 census record is cited for the children of Christian Kulp, but no other sources confirm that this is the same family although it is likely. The use of the family name Clayton indicates a connection; also a 12-year-old Lydia Fry was listed as a member of the household, with occupation "Apprentice to cigar maker." Christian's sister Diana was also a cigar maker at this time, as shown in the 1870 census for her father's household. It is not known whether or not Lydia Fry was a relation.
