Notes
a. Note:   The surname GIRGI is Arabic for: George or Georges Yazbeck George was born in a mountain village called Dhur Shweir, Syria which is a town of the Matn District region of Mt. Sannine overlooking present day Beirut in Lebanon. He immigrated to America in 1889 arriving at New York. He went to Topeka, Kansas and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad Company. Later he went to Santa Fe, New Mexico to reside because he knew someone there. He worked as a peddler...on foot, selling turquoise jewelry and notions eventually saving enough money to buy a wagon.
On February 27, 1893 in Las Animas County, Colorado, he filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen of the US renouncing all allegiance, etc., to the Sultan of Turkey, Abdul Hamid II. A short time later he returned to the old country and married Mary Joseph, the daughter of Peter Joseph and his wife Sarah. Yazbeck and Mary returned to the US and in 1899 her parents immigrated. All went to Las Animas Co., Colorado, to the town of Trinidad to settle.
In the 1910 census for Trinidad, Yazbeck is listed with his wife Mary and children. Also, living in their household were Mary's parents and a brother, George Joseph who was 17 years old, along with Kaliel Joseph and his wife Mary and sons, Isaac and Leo. Kaliel Joseph must have been a brother to Peter Joseph.
Yazbeck and Mary had 12 children, however, only 5 children survived to adulthood. On March 12, 1903 Yazbeck became a naturalized citizen taking the oath of allegiance at the courthouse in Las Animas County.
By 1920 Yazbeck had moved to Des Moines, New Mexico. He bought property and opened another general merchandise store. He lived there until about 1955 when his son Shibil moved him to Santa Fe where he died in 1960.
