 Fought in Civil War (see file). Enlisted in Company K, 45th Wisconsin Infantry, on 13 Feb 1865. Mustered out 17 July, 1865. On Muster and Descriptive Roll, Ferdinand is described as "Kahl, Ferdinand, Private, Born in Germany, Age 40, Occupation Farmer, Marital Status M(arried), Enlisted February 15 at Madison by Adj. A. Rief, Term of Service in Years One, Blue eyes, Dark hair, Fair complexion, Height 5' 9", Mustered Into on February 20 at Madison by Lt. J. H. Purcell, Residence Berry, Dane County, Where Credited Decatur Township, Columbia County, Remarks None."

 Died at age 65 years, 28 days. (Birth date equates to 5 Oct 1825-wkm)
 From Rev. E.F. Scherbel's letter to pension bureau regarding Ferdinand's death, Ferdinand's place of birth was mentioned as Plotha, Germany. Rev. Scherbel also stated that Ferdinand was born on the 3rd day of October 1825.
