Notes
a. Note:   Details concerning John's migrant summers as a young man are murky, but there is general agreement that he left home each summer for several years, riding the rails, and working where and when he could. One faction believes he did this in order to escape overwhelming female presence at home, that his mother hid John's clothes and shoes on one occasion to prevent his departure, but he climbed out the window and went off for the summer anyway. A second faction believes that John left home to find work and that he brought his earnings home to contribute to the family, and he is regarded as something of a hero for doing this.
John graduated from Classical High School in Worcester, class of 1901; Worcester Polytechnic Institute, class of 1905; Georgetown Law School (LLB) and George Washington University (masters in patent law). He worked as a patent examiner while studying law. In 1912, he took a position with Allis-Chalmers in Milwaukee. He was head of the patent department there at the time of his death. During World War I, he enlisted as a first lieutenant in the Army and served as an instructor in the Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Note:   John Kane met Bessie Rumbaugh in Washington, DC, where he attended Georgetown Law School while working at the Patent Office. She was a secretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He continued the courtship by mail after he went to Milwaukee to work for Allis Chalmers (manufacturer of farm equipment and electrical generating equipment). According to church rules relating to "mixed marriages" that were in effect at that time, John and Bessie were married at the Diocesan Chancery in Baltimore (prior to the separation of the Diocese of Washington from the Diocese of Baltimore).
