Is a church member. Education received in common school and two years of high school. Has been a wage earner except the last ten years when he has conducted a grocery store in this city. Worked for Topeka Street Railway Company for twelve years as a conductor. In 1909 engaged in grocery business at 1200 Kansas avenue until last fall when he sold out. Has resided in Topeka 22 years. Was in favor of commission form. His financial standing is fair. He paid $13.26 personal tax in 1909, and $70.57 real estate tax upon property standing in the name of J.J. and Sallie Carter. CARTER DEAD----- Topeka Grocer Had Lived in Topeka the Past 50 Years John J. Carter, 67, Topeka grocer and resident for the past 50 years, died early Tuesday morning of heart disease at his home, 1217 Kansas Avenue. He was born June 9, 1864, on a farm near Raymond, O., and lived there until 17 years of age when he moved to Kansas. He worked on several farms near Topeka and Dover, and then was with the Topeka Railway Company for 12 years. He had been in the grocery business for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie E. Carter of the home address; four daughters, Mrs. J.W. Netrefa, Ashtabula, O., Mrs. L.E. Brooks, Topeka, Mrs. E.E. Emerson, Dodge City, KS, and Miss Ruth E. Carter, of the home address; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at Penwell's chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. The body will lie in state at Penwell's until the funeral hour.
