Note: Lincoln County News, Jan. 4, 1934, page 6: Beverly -- Mrs. Martha White and children and Ben Gough, Frankfort, spent Christmas vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gough. A letter from Martha Irene Gough White to her cousin Nelle Gough King, found with Martha's papers after her death in 2006: Frankfort, Kans. January 20, 1955 Dear Nelle, I'm sorry I haven't got sit down before now to write you. I really intended too but this winter has really been a busy one for me. Pat has been working steady at the carpenter work on the school house until this week on Tuesday. We had a 7" snow (our first) and hasn't been safe to be working yet. It is raining a bit as it got dark so probably be a sheet of ice by morning. I've been shouldering the job of milking 4 cows, feeding 3 bucket calves and 5 pigs so Pat doesn't have to get up so early & be cold when he got to his work. So with my house work & washing & ironing I've kept "on the Ball". We received both boxes you sent in first part of Dec. I just neglected writing to thank you for them. They were appreciated nevertheless. We are going to & are using most of them. I haven't got to sew much this winter, but "this" won't keep up forever. Bill got his leave from the Army on the Sunday after Thanksgiving & had to be back to Fort Bliss, Texas by Dec. 11. So he missed all his Holidays at home. Lois was entertaining all of Wayne's family (25) for Xmas dinner so we had 2 vacant chairs this Xmas in our family. But we got bye. We had a nice Xmas considering --- Lois & family was home last week end and all are fine. The little ones were fine. Don is home nearly every week end so we really have a full life. The little boys & Kathryn are just starting their 2nd semester in school & really wrapped up in school. My folks are fine so far this winter. Dad celebrated his 83 birthday Jan. 17. Marg. & I surprised him with oyster soup dinner. Then he and Chas. went to Frankfort in the afternoon. Mable and Edwin didn't get to Aunt Sadie's funeral. I'm wondering if anyone told them in time for them to come. I don't know definitely what did ail Aunt Sadie. Do know she had gall stone & couldn't operate because of her heart condition. The funeral was at Paddens & the same preacher you had for Uncle Will . He did a wonderful job as he did for Uncle Will. We saw Uncle Gene a minute in town to-day. He was fine & lives alone. I read Dad your letter from the Bishop of Barking and Dad said he remembered his father telling when he lived in Herefordshire, England (suburb of London). Then he told me that Grandpa Gough had a sister in London by the name of Jane Bethal, also a sister in Canada by name of Ann Watson. His eldest sister was Mary Palmer & she lived in Texas. But he didn't have any more definite addresses & of course would only be their children or most likely grandchildren there by now and they're our ages or much older. Our farm here sold in first part of November and we must move by March 1. We are still searching for a farm to rent where we can keep our live stock & finding it a difficult job. Seems you nearly have to buy a farm to get one to live on these days. We think we located a farm yesterday that has a very difficult water situation on it that we may be able to get. Won't know until next week some time. In meantime we'll keep our fingers crossed & hoping & praying we can find a better place. It's only 1 1/2 mile from here (south). Tell Stuart if he'd like to write a line to Bill that he might find time to answer him. He's finding being a soldier a full time job. His last letter he was having nose bleeds so bad. He's had that trouble since a little boy. He wrote the little boys to eat a lot & not be a "punny like Bill". His address is: Pvt. William D. White US 55 505 370 Btry A 2nd Tng Bn AAA Rtc. Fort Bliss, Texas I think he'll be there training with the big Anti Aircraft Guns for another 3 or 4 weeks ???probably overseas ??? Sorry ??? write sooner but I hope you can forgive me. Write whenever you can. Martha & family (The ??? were unreadable sections that had a large wet spot.)
