Note: from the Manhattan Mercury, August 26, 1998: Ruth L. Walters Berkihiser, 92, formerly of 1621 Wood Crest Drive and more recently of 1923 Little Kitten Dr., died Monday at St. Joseph Senior Community in Manhattan. She was born January 25, 1906, in Frankfort. She grew up in Frankfort and graduated from Frankfort High School. She had been a resident since 1929. She married Theodore G. Walters on Feb. 6, 1929 in Manhattan. He preceded her in death on Nov.30, 1974. She later married Charles A. Berkihiser on Sept. 20, 1980. He died April 8, 1998. Mrs. Berkihiser was a homemaker and for many years worked as a baker in food preperation for USD 383. Prior to her coming to Manhattan, she worked for the United Telephone Company in Frankfort from 1925 to 1929. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Telephone Pioneers. Survivors include a son, Clifford D. Walters, Manhattan; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home in Manhattan. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
