Note: NI7 NELSON MILES Male Event(s): Birth: 21 MAY 1807 Christening: 22 OCT 1810 Saint Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, New York Parents: Father: BENJAMIN MILES Family Mother: MARIA ------------------------------- NOTE: The following newspaper accounts relate a "fatal" accident suffered by Nelson Miles of Lapeer County, Michigan. The newspaper accounts seem to indicate this is Nelson Miles Jr. who had a wife and infant child in 1877. However, Nelson Miles, Jr. appears on the 1880, 1900 & 1910 census in Lapeer County, Michigan. It seems difficult to imagine someone could have survived the injuries detailed in the account of the accident. Nelson Miles, Sr. appears in the 1870 census in Lapeer Co. but does not appear on the 1880 census. Elizabeth Johnson Miles, died in Lapeer County, MI in 1875. At that time her marital status was recorded as "married". It is assumed the appearance of the accident in a Mexico, New York newspaper was due to the fact that the parents of Florence Lawton (wife of Nelson Miles, Jr.) resided in Mexico at that time. This seems to present an opportunity to speculate that an erroneous report may have been given in that it could have been Nelson Miles, Sr. who suffered the accident, rather than Nelson, Jr. In the absence of further proof, this information is attached to both Nelson Miles, Sr. and Jr. --------------------------------- http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html Newspaper Mexico Independant 1877-1880 - 0461.PDF Kicked by His Horse Mr. Nelson Miles, a young and welathy farmer living int he south-eastern part of the city, received a probably fatal wound on Saturday. He was driving a four-horse team attached to a plow, when the (?clevis?) on one of the forward whittletrees became disarranged, and while engaged in fixing it, received a kick on the left temple from one of the horses, which will, without doubt, prove fatal very soon. Two pieces of the skull an inch and a quarter square have been removed letting out a small portion of brain. Mr. Miles is an man above reporach, universally respected, and married less than two years ago. He has a wife and infant child. - Lapier (Mich.) Clarion, Aug. 28. Fowlerville Review, Fowlerville, Livingston County, Michigan Friday September 5, 1879 Nelson MILES , a highly respected farmer near Lapeer, was fatally injured on the 23d by a kick on the side of his head given by a horse.
