Notes
a. Note:   While on a prospecting trip with his dad (Fred Schultz 1877), they stopped at a restaurant called Harvy Girls in Needles, California. They had a piece of apple pie. This is the only time he ate at a restaurant while growing up.
Interview with William by his daughter Karen.
Where did Grandpa (Fred Schultz 1877) start working for the railroad?
He probably started in Chicago. Then he went to Kansas, New Mexico and ended up in Needles, California. He had to work nights and sleep during the day. It was too hot to do so he quit. Moved to the Los Angeles area and worked for Goodyear.
  Wasn't he an engineer?
Yes, but I'm not sure if he was a yard engineer or a long run engineer. I remember he used to have to make the Ratoone Pass (sp?) run and that was a long difficult run. Back in those days you had huge wheels and little brake pads on them that you tightened with a chain as you needed them. It was a lot of hard work.
How did Grandma and Grandpa meet?
I'm not sure, but I know that my Mom was sponsored by my Uncle Peter and Uncle Garritt. She came through Galveston, Texas.
Do you think they met because of Grandpa's work-with him traveling around on the railroad?
Could have been-I don't know. They all moved to California around the same time.
What did Uncle Peter and Uncle Garret do for work?
They both worked for the Lumber Company. When I went to Holland in 1954 I met about 500 (exaggeration) relatives. I didn't understand them and they didn't understand me. Except for Uncle Garrett. He had moved back to Holland by then.
Did he ever come back to the USA?
 No.
Your Grandmother lived with you in California didn't she?
Yes. Those aren't pleasant memories-she was mean to us kids. Audrey got along with her, but she is 12 years older than me. She used to take handme downs and sew dresses for Audrey and suits for us boys. Most of the pictures of me when I was young-I was in a suit.
Probably because hat was special gathering or something?
Yes, we used to get together and go to the beach, and there was a park that we would go to.
You mentioned that Grandpa lived in Kansas. Is that why Aunt Audrey thinks that your Uncle Bill lived there, too?
I don't know. I think he lived in Pittsburgh. He played the oboe and worked for the University and played in the Symphony. He came to visit us once. His wife didn't come. We were not a refined as she was and she looked down on us. We lived on _________ street then. He took us kids to the store and bought us some candy.
  That's all I remember.
