Note: Attended school until age 13. Clerked in a store for about ten years. Traveled as a salesman for another eight years. In 1913 he moved to Rice Lake, WI and went into mercantile business. In 1928 he sold out and went into insurance business. He met Helma Dahl while traveling; she was a buyer in the store where she worked. Heart Attack Is Fatal to J. Jacobson --------------- Prominent Rice Lake Business Man Died Sunday Morning --------------- Started in Business Here in 1913: Widely Known in Masonic Circles --------------- John J. Jacobson, prominent Rice Lake business man and widely known member of the Masonic lodge, died at 2:35 am Sunday at his home of a heart attack. He had suffered an attack Saturday evening, but this was not serious enough to alarm his family. Mr. Jacobson had a medical examination Saturday morning and apparently was in good health. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 from the Presbyterian church with the Rev. C. R. Johnson officiating. Burial was in Nora cemetery. Pallbearers were Harry F. Moors, J. E. Rickerman, Robert Plenty, Abner Olsen, Arthur E. Berg, and Ira Thomas. Mr. Jacobson was born Feb.1, 1884 in Cumberland, the son of P. D. and Marie (Stene) Jacobson. He attended the Cumberland schools and then clerked in Cumberland for a while. For five years he was a traveling salesman for Finch, Van Slyck & McConville, wholesale dry goods firm of St. Paul, and for five years was employed in a similar capacity with Tubbs & Hutchinson, a St. Paul who;esale dry goods firm. In 1913 he came to Rice Lake and with his father purchased the Benson Brothers mercantile business. The new business was known as the Jacobson Mercantile Company and was incorporated with P. D. Jacobson as president, Carl as secretary and treasurer, John as manager and Hans as one of the directors. On Sept. 1, 1914 Mr. Jacobson was married to Miss Helma Caroline Dahl of Rice Lake. The couple have made their home there since that time. In 1928 the Jacobson Mercantile Company was sold and Mr. Jacobson started into the insurance business and became district manager for Mutual Life Ins. Co. of New York. In this capacity he built up a large business and sold many of the large policies now held in this territory. Mr. Jacobson has been connected with a large number of lodges and clubs since living in Rice Lake but he is best known for his activities in the Masonic lodge. He was worshipful master of the local lodge and has held offices in the wisconsin Grand Lodge. Recently he took his thirty-second degree in the lodge and was president of the class that was enrolled at Eau Claire. Mr. Jacobson is survived by his wife, two sons, John and Neil, his father, three brothers, Elling, Clarence and Lloyd, all of Rice Lake; five sisters, Mrs. Helene Jacobson and Mrs. Harry F. Neerase, this city; Pearl, Minneapolis; Clara, Portland, Ore., Mary Luverne, Minn. and a step-brother, Rick Stone, Superior. A. J. Hyllengren had charge of arrangements.
