Note: All John's children insisted that he was a manager of the mine, although one granddaughter used the term "underground manager." Family legend says that John Stewart would have been "the laird of Black Isle," but that the family couldn't afford to pay the taxes on the land. Grandson John Granger Hamilton Stewart called himself by that title saying it had passed from first son to first son for generations. However, John was not the first son. So whether the title came through Alexander or Jane Stewart, it wouldn't have gone to John but his older brother Alexander, unless Alexander died young. Of course, "laird" is not, in any event, a title in the sense of hereditary privilege. Another family legend says that the Stewarts, which branch I don't know, descended from "Black Jack" Stewart, a smuggler, who brought wine in from France and slipped it across the border into England. He did well enough, according to John's daughters, to own more than one ship. Son Alexander was present at his father's death, and John's parents are listed as deceased. 1871 Census, Dalserf, Dist. 2, 638 (2) "to Woodside" p. 32, Marlodge John Stewart, 21, miner, b.
