!MOTHER: Lin Cornelius Strong, THE AMMERMANN FAMILY HISTORY; 1996; Part 3, p. [72]. When her mother died, leaving eight children ranging in age from 18 years to 1½-year-old Tillie, their Aunt Hilke [FOKKEN, married to Euje PETERSEN], who lived a half-mile down the road, helped a lot the first year. She wanted to raise Tillie, "but my Dad would not let her." The [Bunde Christian Reformed] church newspaper was written in Dutch, and that's the way I learned both Dutch and German. Later I learned English at school. (Told by Jennie FOKKEN PETERS in 1990)
