Note: 1. Alice and Albert traveled a great deal as evidenced by the many postcards from many different cities and states. 2. Postcard from "Maggie"--postmarked Aug. 18, 1912, Yerington, Nev.--addressed to "Mrs. A. A. Hinchman, Beckwith, Plumas County, California, C/O Mrs. Will Sperry"--"Dear Alice Fred sent you some money for Burdette the first part of the month Did you get it? The last letter I wrote to Burdette in Vacaville was returned to me The school commences on the third of next month All are well. Hope to see you soon Love to you, Albert and Burdette, also Hattie and Mrs. Sperry Maggie". A reference here to Burdette staying with Jennie and Norman Bethune. Also "the school" probably refers to Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Virginia where Burdette attended school. 3. Postcard from "Hester Hinchman"--no postmark (only date is on the front of the postcard-1913-it is hand written not part of the card--no address--"Dear Alice Good wishes for you all during the New Year. Alva? spent Christmas with us-he is now in San Diego. He was shot in the wrist? when running the train through to Corinto? Charlie went to the French Hospital to have an operation performed, but the doctors told him he had a cancer, and they could do nothing for him. He has been drunk ever since. Love to all Hester Hinchman" The people mentioned in this postcard are probably relatives of Albert. 4. Postcard from "Alice"--postmarked Apr 3, 1915, San Diego, Cal--addressed to "Mrs. Fred Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada"-- "Mission Cliff Garden San Diego 4/3rd 1915 arrived here...Love to all Alice 5. Postcard from "Alice H."--postmarked Apr 3, 1915, San Diego, Cal--addressed to "Mrs. Norman Bethune, Vacaville, Cal"--"Mission Cliff Garden San Diego......With love from us both Alice H." 6. Postcard from "J. Bethune"--postmarked Oct (date unreadable) 1922, Burke, Cal.--addressed to "Mrs. F. Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada, Box 75"--"....I suppose Alice is up at Shasta retreat now...J. Bethune". Front of card is photo of "Burke's Sanitarium, Santa Rosa, Cal." 7. Postcard from "Aunt Alice"--no postmark (no other date)--addressed to "Linville Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada"--"My dear little boy I suppose you are a very good little boy and are looking for dear old Santa to come...How are your cows pigs horses and calves? You must write Aunt Alice a nice little letter and tell me all about you stock and yourself...Aunt Alice" 8. Postcard from "Aunt Alice"--no postmark (no other date)--addressed to "Burdette Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada--"My dear Burdette I am so glad to hear that you are a good boy and getting along so nicely in school I suppose you are looking forward to coming down to Uncle Norman's for you summer vacation Aunt Mary was here and she told me what a good little boy you are...with love from Aunt Alice". References to Burdette attending Staunton Military Academy. References to Norman (Jennie) Bethune and an "Aunt Mary?" (possible to William Hitsman-have postcards addressed to Will from Mary). 9. Postcard from "Alice H."--postmarked May 5, 1923, New York, N.Y.--addressed to "Mrs. Fred N. Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada, P.O. Box 75"--"...Just recd letter from Jennie, She continues to improve, but not yet well...love to you Fred & Brother. Alice H." Reference to Jennie being in poor health, possibly even still in Burke's Sanitarium. Reference to Linville as "Brother". 10. Albert A. was 26 years older than Alice according to the ages listed in the 1930 Federal Census. In the 1900 Federal Census their ages indicate that he is 20 years older than she is. 11. In Vern Dander source records for Alice he mentions the possibility that Alice was divorced from Albert in 1915 when she was informant on mother's death cert. as Alice Hitsman. My records indicate that she was not divorced from Albert. 12. Postcard from "Alice"--postmarked (date unreadable) Seattle, Wash.--addressed to "Mrs. Fred Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada"--"Seattle Oct 4th, 1915 Your second letter received today...I will write to John again soon I would like to see him while I am in this part of the country I wrote a postal...not heard from her as yet We contemplate going to British Columbia...will return from there to this place and shortly after will be on our way to some other place Bert is getting restless I dont think he feels very well I am glad Mrs. Cox is going to the Fair she is such a kind good woman I received a letter from Jane They have not sold their...as yet hope they will...to all the family and yourself write soon Alice". References to John M. Hitsman living the Pacific Northwest and possibly referring to Jane not mother an indication that Sarah Jane Hitsman was not her natural mother. References also to Albert whom she calls 'Bert' and him not feeling well-a substantial age difference between Alice and Albert. 13. Postcard from "Alice H."--postmarked Jun 1923? (almost unreadable) Atlantic City, N.J.--addressed to "Mrs. Fred Bertrand, Yerington, Nevada, Box 75"--"June 17, 1915 Atlantic City...Cornelia is with us she sends her love to all of you. How is Burdette? References to Cornelia, Burdette and Noe Linville (Brother). 14. In the 1930 Federal Census birthplace of Alice's father is listed as Pennsylvania. 15 On the 1910 Federal Census number of children born/living is listed as '2'. 16. In 1920 Albert and Alice were living with Cornelia and Wilfrid. 17. Have a postcard with no writing at all. Picture is of buildings and landscape around them. Words read "Oakland Cremation Association, Howe and Mather Sis. Oakland, Cal." Theorize that this was the crematorium that handle the arrangements for Albert Jr. 18. Postcard from "The Painters and Eleanor"--postmarked Dec 23 1912 Sparks, Nev.--addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Hinchman 166 Santa Clara Ave. Oakland, Cal."--"Greetings from The Painters and Eleanor Sparks Nev. City, Town or Rural District of Death 26 yrs B. In California Life". Birthplace of Father listed as unknown State or Country listed as Pennsylvania. Informant on certificate was Albert A Hinchman.
