Julius served in the Civil War on the side of the Union in the 141st Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was organized in Gallipolis, Ohio, from the 11th to the 14th of May, 1864, to serve one hundred days. It was composed of the Thirty-sixth Batallion, Ohio National Guard, from Athens, County; Sixteenth Battalion, Ohio National Guard from Gallia County and two other Battallions. On the 21st of May the Regiment was ordered to report at Charleston, West Virginia, to relieve the Thirteenth West Virginia Infantry. The One hundred and Forty-first remained at this point, on guard duty, until the 25th of August, when it was ordered to Gallipolis, Ohio and mustered out September 3, 1864, on expiration of term of service. Julius is listed in Company E. and his name is spelled Julius A. Guinn age 19 and he is with another Thomas C Guinn age 24. It states they served 100 days.
The US Census for Urbana, Somers Township, Champaign County, Illinois lists a Augustus Gwin, age 27 as a farm laborer born in Ohio working for a Physician named Henry Haley. Of special interest is that he is very near John Thomas who has a daughter named Josephine age 17 that Augustus Gwin marries.
The US Census for Monona County, Iowa for 1880, indicates a J. A. Gwinn age 35, a laborer born in Ohio, father born in Virginia and mother born in Ohio. Also listed are his children; Eva daughter, age 8 born in Illinois father born in Ohio mother born in Indiana and Bertha daughter, age 6 born in Illinois father born in Ohio and mother born in Indiana. Also listed in this household, is a boarder William Carroll age 30, listed as a farmhand he being born in Wisconsin. A land sale latter lists a Mary Guinn Carroll divorced. It Could be this William Carroll married Julius' sister Mary. The family story is that one of Julius's sisters is buried in the Onawa cemetery. She has not been found yet.
By adding the 7 years until Eva was married to her age in 1880 you determine that she was only 15 years old when she was married. The family story goes as such; Gus Gwin was going to move and take the two girls with him. Well, Eva developed a liking to the next door family the Murphy's, of which she was especially fond of one in particular, John D Murphy. They were married on John's birthday and she being a very young age took her sister to live with her. So Eva grew up quickly having lost her mother and really was the mother of her Gwin family at a very young age. The had just a small inexpensive home or shack to being their lives together in but that was common with the young irish families.
