a. Note:   As a boy, he attended the John Adys school in Deptford. Apparently christened "Dyer", by 1881 he had changed his name to Dwyer to match his stage name.

 1881 census, not found in Kent. 1881, July 9th, he enlisted in the 50th Royal West Kent regiment (#9), listing his age as 25, and served in Natal from 1881-1882, Egypt from 1882-1886 and received the following service medals: Egypt 1882, Khedive's Bronze Star and Nile, 1884-1885.
