Insight from Sarah Hutt ( a close friend of Mums )
There was a little store on Trenton Rd. run by a man called Norman Chadwick, Norman asked Sarah if she had met my mother. I suppose that he asked that because he knew that both the ladies were Scottish. Shortly after that, in late 1947, these two Scottish ladies met and became close friends. Being neighbours it was easy for their friendship to develope, Sarha lived in No. 3 building and Mum and Dad lived in No. 2. Collectively the appartment complex was called 'The Marshall Appartments', and commonly referred to as the Toppers. Sarah used to babysit me while Mum and Dad went out. A year or so later Mum and Dad moved to Prince Edward Island, but Sarah and Mum kept in touch writting letters to each other . Over the decades, letters were sent back and forth and exchanged Christmas Cards. The bond between these two ladies was so close, that in a letter that Sarah wrote to me, she related that when she was reading a letter that Mum had written, she could hear Mums voice speaking as she read. They would write to each other, exchanging stories about their sons, and grandsons.
On one occassion, an old school friend Doreen, from Scotland, came to visit Mum. Doreen and Mum went down to visit Sarah and all three spent a special day together.
In December of 1993, a Christmas Card arrived in the mail for Mum, it was from Sarah. I wrote a letter to Sarah explaining that Mum had passed away on July 12 and shortly thereafter I received a letter of condolence from her.
On Thursday, August 22, 1996, while on a trip to Prince Edward Island to do genealogy work, Gloria and I stop in Truro Nova Scotia, to visit Sarah and stayed for supper. She had some fond memories of mum and I, that she shared with us. While there we met her sister, who had come over from Scotland to visit Sarah. Her son had stopped in to visit as well. After our visit we left to catch the last ferry from Caribou, Nova Scotia to Wood Island, Prince Edward Island at 8:30 pm. and arrived at Seal Cove Campground in Murray Harbour North about 10:30 pm.
