a. Note:   h Blantyre. He was seriously injured in the 1877 mine disaster when 215 miners were killed. He was then a young man of 32 years and had five small children. The eldest was 10 years and the youngest was born only two days after the tragedy. Due to methane gas which had been the cause of the massive explosion Arthur’s lungs were badly damaged and he lived at home for the following thirteen years unable to do physical work. On his death certificate he is recorded as having been a colliery overseer, his father David Lamond, a coal miner (dec’d), his mother Catherine Hamilton (dec’d), and cause of death Pneumonia.
