Note: It is quite difficult to trace John Cowan. He is nowhere to be found in the 1851 census but that does not mean he did not exist since the quality of information was down to the enumerator. He was certainly alive in 1847 when Maggie was born. She was also born In Neilston so if John came from Ireland he lived long enough to have a child here. However, it is possible that he was dead by 1851's census. In the OPR there is only one record of a John Cowan and Mary Leitch who had one child, Maggie in 1847. My guess is that John Cowan died between 1847 and 1851.
