Note: I think Mary is the mother of Maggie Cowan.
1851 Census
In the census Mary is listed as staying in Auld Muirfoot with her mother, a couple of cousins, a lodger and a child named Maggie Cowan. Since it was not unusual for women to revert back to their maiden name after the death of their husband it is a reasonably safe assumption that this is what Mary did. She is described as unmarried rather than widow but I reckon that this is an error on the part of an not very efficient enumerator who has described four year old Maggie Cowan as the niece of Mary Leitch Snr...74 year old women tend not to have four year old nieces! I think it was her grand-daughter and that with the other relatives in the house he simply got mixed up.
