a. Note:   In her will, dated March 5, 1873, Nancy named her husband, Philip W. Knowles as guardian for Fernando J. Knowles, son of Fernando J. Knowles. The will was probated in July, 1873.
  In the 1840 Census, Nancy and Philip are listed with 8 children. Nancy and Philip were married in 1832, so they had a child every year until 1840. By the time of the 1850 Census, only 4 of those 8 children born prior to 1840 were still living in their household. It is presumed that at least 4 children had died by 1850.
