Notes
a. Note:   Fernando was raised by his grandparents, from the time of his mother's death in 1868. His grandfather, Philip W. Knowles, was appointed his guardian Feb. 14, 1868, by the Hancock County Court (Illinois). In her will, Nancy Hill Knowles named her husband, Philip W. Knowles, as the guardian for Fernando. This was a puzzling request, since Philip was already his guardian. Nancy died in 1873. For reasons not yet discovered, a new guardian, Horace Fitch, was appointed by the Harrison County Court (Missouri), January 28, 1876. When Fernando married Oct. 29, 1885, he was not of age to marry without parental consent. His marriage license includes a statement that permission to marry was given by his guardian, C. J. Blackburn. It is not known why all these transfers of guardianship occurred. His grandfather, Philip W. Knowles, was alive until 1888.
