Notes
a. Note:   William C. Knowles married the widow (Addie Harris) of his brother, Fernando J. Knowles, following the death (or divorce) of his first wife, Margaret Smith.
On the Muster and Descriptive Rolls of Co. B, 91st Infantry, Illinois Volunteers, William is listed as, "Deserted July 7, 63 at Benton Barracks Missouri." This may have been prompted by a health crisis with his wife. She apparently died sometime following their marriage and his subsequent marriage to his brother's widow in 1866.
