Note: According to his obituary, Philip Thomas Knowles was, "...taken prisoner by Morgan", during the Civil War. He was discharged March 28, 1863, due to disablity, according to the Muster and Descriptive Roll of the 91st Infantry Regiment of Illinois Volunteers (his Certificate for Disabilty for Discharge states the discharge occurred March 18, 1863). This Certificate of Disability for Discharge states the presumed cause of the disability was "exposure." The disability was described as: "Phthisis Pumonales -- deposit of tubercle being found in the apex of both lungs. Has also ascitis from hepatic derangement." The Declaration for Original Invalid Pension states he contracted these ailments while serving at Hospital No. 1 in Kentucky. He was first treated for these ailments, Nov. 20, 1862, at the same hospital at which he had been serving. Prior to his service in the Civil War, Philip is known to have lived in Delaware, Ohio, and Illinois. His Declaration for Pension, dated May 28, 1912, stated that following his discharge, he lived in Dallas City, Illinois until March 1869, in Marysville, Missouri from March 1869 until December 1869, in Weston, Oregon from December 1869 until 1872, back to Marysville, Missouri until July 1st, 1872, Ogden, Utah until December, 1873, Virqmia City (no longer in map of Montana. He appears in Beaverhead County in the 1880 census), Montana until 1884, Wamic, Oregon until 1905, and Dufur, Oregon from then until the date of the Declaration. An obituary states he moved to Oregon from Montana in 1883, so there are inconsistencies in some of these dates. In an ad (source unknown), Philip Thomas Knowles presents himself as a, " Mechanao, Theropy, Electric and Magnetic Healer." There is a picture of him in the ad with the caption, "Dr. Knowles, Dufur, Ore." The ad lists a number of ailments he claimed to treat.
