a. Note:   According to the 1840 Census, Joseph was between 70 and 80 years old, while the oldest female in the household was between 40 and 50 years old. It is presumed this oldest female was his wife. If so, she could not have been his first wife, since Joseph had a daughter, Elizabeth in about 1795, when the person presumed to be his wife in the 1840 Census, would have been five years old at the most. As of 1840, there were 4 children still under age 20 living in the household, as well as 2 sons between ages 20 and 30.
