At the time of Job's recorded death he was a serving soldier with the 1/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers where he held the rank of private. The 1/7th Battalion was a Battalion of the Territorial Force ( the Territorial Force was composed of local volunteers, men who would train as soldiers on a part-time basis, hence the nickname of Saturday Night Soldiers. The men had no obligation to serve overseas, although when asked the vast majority agreed to do so). Job however was not an original member of the 1/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, and never served as a Territorial Force soldier, he was a later recruit drafted into the 1/7th Battalion to help bring it back up to fighting strength after the Battalion (like many others) had been decimated in the earlier campaigns during the Great War. At the outbreak of war on the 4th August 1914, the 1/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers Headquaters and Drill Hall was situated at Cross Lane, Salford,Lancashire. The 1/7th Battalion were part of the Lancashire Fusiliers Brigade, East Lancashire Division.
This information was contained in a letter to Berenice McGarry, explanation part of letter below:
Dear Berenice Pleases find below as promised my research for you uncle Job Dexter Nichols. With regards to my research, I first carried out a search for soldiers named JOB DEXTER NICHOLS, JOB NICHOLS, and all soldiers with the surname of NICHOLS and NICHOLLS. I them ran a check for all of the above, who residence was listed as Eccles, Manchester, and found only one positive match, this being JOSEPH (JOBY) NICHOLS, the lineage and parental roots are a match for your uncle JOB DEXTER NICHOLS. No other soldiers that fell during the Great war with the surname of NICHOLS or NICHOLLS have any lineage and/or parental roots, that come anywhere close. As to why Job enlisted into the British Army using the name of JOSEPH (JOBY) NICHOLS is unknown, but many soldiers that served with the British Army, Navy and other Commonwealth forces did so, each had there own reasons for using name variations. As to the naming of Job's memorial plaque, as Joseph Nicholls. Spelling mistakes of surnames are not that uncommon on memorial plaques, I have two such plaques at home with surname misspellings. The wording of his Christian name 'JOSEPH' on his memorial plaque is more easily explained, Job enlisted under that name therefore that is what the authority's would have submitted to the manufactures of the plaques. The numbers on the envolope in which the mermorial plaque was sent 852179 or 852119 was not Job's Army service number, but probaly just an issue number for the plaque some were sent with it on others not..
Note:   Job Nichols Given Name on Enlistment: Joseph (Joby) Nichols. Given Place of Birth on Enlist
