Note: About 1946 my Mom, age 10, had appendicitis, she was operated on at Stovall Hospital in Grayson, KY. However, something went wrong during surgery and the Dr. somehow accidently clipped a portion of her bowels, which then apparently started leaking inside of her, it set up gangrene and she became very ill. Her Mother told her later that her stomach was swollen to the size of a woman about seven months pregnant, her Mother also told her how she insisted the Doctors there not touch her again and made them let her bring Mom home. The Doctors said she was signing her death warrant by taking her home, but Granny replied, No, she would be signing her death warrant if she let them touch her again. As soon as they got home her Mother called the local Doctor, Dr. Frank Green, who made a house call that very evening, he gave her some kind of medicine and told her mother if she made it through the night he would have an ambulance from West Liberty to take her to the hospital in Lexington in the morning. It had been raining for days and her Mother told Dr. Green the road was too washed out, the ambulance wouldn't be able to get to them. Dr. Green said not to worry he would send some men to carry her out. She survived the night and the next morning Dr. Green along with several men from Sandy Hook, (one which she remembers for sure was Pierce Rose), carried her out to meet the ambulance, it was pouring the rain and she remembers someone standing at her head holding an umbrella over her. It was a long walk out Sheepskin road to the ambulance, but they made it. Her Mother and Dr. Green both rode in the ambulance with her to a hospital in Lexington. The Doctors there took immediate action and inserted a tube to drain the infection, Mom said she remembers seeing the liquid as it came out of her stomach, she said it looked like green "frog shit", (her words...LOL). She said there were several gallons jars filled before she was completely better. Mom said Granny didn't have much money but had insisted on staying at the hospital by her side, Pierce Rose called Granny aside and handed her a $50 dollar bill, and told her to pay it back when and if she could, but if not, not to worry about it. Granny paid him back as soon as she got home, and she never forgot what a difference his kindness made, thanks to him she was able to stay with Mom until she was released. After that Granny always tried to send a few dollars to family and friends that were staying with loved ones in the hospital. Mom also remembers that lots and lots of people from Elliott County coming to visit, one she remembers in particular was Lonnie Charles Weddington because his blood type was the same as hers so he came and donated blood. (They are cousins)
