Note: John Wheeler fought in the War of 1812 or the "War with the Creeks" as it was called locally. He enlisted 24 September 1813 for three months in Captain John Harpole's Company of Mounted Gunmen, Regiment of Tennessee Militia, commanded by Colonel Newton Cannon. He was discharged on 7 January 1814. [No record of this service has been found ... Jack Leo] John Wheeler married Matilda Doughty in July, 1823, in Fauquier County, Virginia. She was a daughter of Robert Doughty, who appeared before the Fauquier County Clerk on 17 July 1823 and certified his willingness for John Wheeler to obtain a license [obtained on 21 July] to marry his daughter "Matildy". Matilda is estimated to have been born about 1800 in Virginia. John Wheeler and John Q. Morehead made bond 21 July 1823. On July 17, 1823, Robert Doughty appeared and made statement: "TO THE CLERK OF FAUQUIER COUNTY, THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT I AM WILLING THAT JOHN WHEELER SHOULD GET A LICENSE TO MARRY MY DAUGHTER MATILDY DOUGHTY GIVEN UNDER MY HAND AND SEAL THIS 17TH DAY OF JULY 1823." Meriman Payne and John Q. Morehead witnessed Robert's statement John Wheeler died about August, 1827.
