Note: The 1830 Federal Census shows John Coonrod in Wilson County Tennessee [note that John Coonrod, age 18-26, was enumerated in Wilson County in 1820 with only one other person, a female age 16-26.] [source John A. Leo, III, Fairfax Virginia.] male 30-40 [John] fem. 20-30 [Matilda] 3 fems 5-10 [John's daus by first marriage?] male 5-10 [George Henry Wheeler, age 6] female und.5 [Mary Wheeler] male, under 5 [John D. Wheeler, age 3] female, und 5 [Amanda Coonrod, age abt 1] female, und 5 [no known match] John Coonrod died intestate in 1837. An inventory and account of the sale of his personal estate was recorded in the December Term 1837 of the Wilson County Court and the inventory and account of sale was presented and included in wills and inventory records on 24 Nov 1837 [Wilson Co Court Minute Book 1836-1844, page 90 and Wills & Inventories Book 1837-1839, pages 183 and 184.] In July 1840, Robert Doughty, was appointed guardian of Henry and Mary Wheeler, minor orphans of John Wheeler, deceased, and Edward B. Wheeler was released as their guardian [he had been appointed in March 1837]. On February 2, 1846, Phillip Fisher was appointed guardian of Mary and John Wheeler and Elvira and Newton Coonrod, minor heirs of Robert Doughty. On 14 Dec 1848, a settlement was recorded with Phillip Fisher, guardian of Mary and John Wheeler and Elvira and Newton Coonrod, MINOR HEIRS OF COONROD, DECEASED. It was the practice in these times to appoint guardians for minors when their father died, regardless of whether their mother was alive, since the wife did not inherit from her husband but rather received a dower [or 1/3 of his estate] good only for her lifetime. Thus the 1837 Edward B. Wheeler guardian appointment would not necessarily reflect Matilda's death, nor would any of the subsequent appointments, except for the 1848 mention of both Wheeler and Coonrod children as minor heirs of Coonrod deceased. Thus, we can conclude that Matilda [Doughty] Wheeler-Coonrod probably died sometime during the year 1848. [per Jack Leo]
