Notes
a. Note:   John's birthplace is recorded in his obituary as 'Delavan, Indiana'. No such place exists. It may be a 'mis-remembering' of Delaware or Dearborn County. Early Delaware County included the modern counties of Delaware, Henry, Rush, and Decatur, and Dearborn County contained the area now encompassing Dearborn, Switzerland, Fayette, Wayne, and Ohio counties. The family was certainly from the area as William, John's son, was born in Dearborn County in 1838 and Vetile, John's brother, was married in Rush County in 1843. In later census records John indicates his father was born in France, mother, New Jersey.
John and Rohama were recorded as married in Hamilton County, Ohio, and their first born son William was born just west in Dearborn County, Indiana. They were in Crosby Twp, Hamilton County, Ohio, northwest of Cincinnati appearing in the 1840 census as a young couple with a small son. Mary Jane and Samuel were born there in the next few years.
They moved to New London Twp, Henry County, Iowa in 1844 and the following year John Louis was born. They moved west to Decatur County in 1852.
On 12 March, 1855, John Wood sold a 40 acre tract of land to John Laddusaw for $50, listed as 'The southwest corner of Section 3, New Buda Twp, Decatur County'. This is just west of modern day Davis City.
Tragedy affected the family when four children died on March 8, 1861 when a prairie fire consumed their home.
John, his family, and his son William move to Union Twp, Plymouth County, Iowa in 1869.
John was living at the home of his son William in 1899 when his wife Rohama died. He died the following year, in Brookings, South Dakota.
