Note: Reuben Sims: From the Veterans Administration, Washington, D.C. .Pension claim S.6100: "Reuben Sims was born Mar. 17,1755 in Culpeper County, Virginia. The names of his parents were not stated. While residing in Culpeper Co., Reuben Sims enlisted & served as a private with the Virginia troops as follows: in 1775 and 1776, about seven months in Capt. Stevens' company, Col. Darke's regiment, and was in the battle of Long Bridge; from in March 1777, three months in Capt. John Waugh's company, Col. Morgan's regiment, was in an engagement at Petersburg; from in Aug. 1777, four months in Capt. Henry Hill's company, Col, John Barbour's regiment; in the spring of 1778 or 1779, three months in Capt, James Nash's company, under Maj. Hill; in the fall of 1781, three months in Capts. Jas. Clarke's & Triplett's companies, Col. Edmunds' regt. , was in the Siege of Yorktown, where he was wounded (nature of wound not shown), marched with the prisoners to Winchester, where he was discharged. He was allowed pension on his application executed Sept. 20, 1832, then a resident of Culpeper Co,, Va. , where he had always lived. The papers on file in this claim contain no reference to wife or children of the soldier, Reuben Sims. His sister, Lucy Sims was about fifteen years old in 1775, and in 1832, was living in Culpeper County, Virginia." Reuben Sims married Sarah Tatum 18 Jan 1787 in Culpeper co Va., Wm Mason, Baptist minister, officiating. Reuben, John & Abner Sims, brothers, are all listed in 1801 tax lists, same county, 14 May, with another brother Jeremiah, May 18, & Wm Tatum May 16. 1811 TL Culpeper: Reubin Sims -2 white tithables; 4 horses;98 A. land. 1810 census Culpeper co Va; Reuben Sims 1 M 45+ ; 1 F 26-45; 1 M & 1 F 16-26;3 F 10-16; 2 M & 2 F -10 1820 census Culpeper co Va: Reuben Sims 1 M 45+ ; 2 F 26-45; 2 M & 2 F 16-26;1 M 16-18; 1 M & 1 F 10-16; 2 M & 1 F -10; 0 slaves. When Reuben Sims Sr. applied for his pension for Revolutionary war service 20 Sept 1832, he was then a resident of Culpeper County, as he had been all his life. However , Rappahannock County was taken from Culpeper in 1833 and he then became a resident of that county. Reuben Sims Sr. conveyed land in Culpeper to Reuben Jr. & Thomas Simms 21 Apr 1832 not long before he applied for his pension. The Rappahannock Land Book of 1836 shows that Reubin Simms had 98 A and Reubin and Thomas 100 A., all on the Covington river. Culpeper co Va DB ZZ-24 (4-1-1832:5-24-1832) & Sims' entries in Land Book of 1836 Rappahannock co Va (7 entries) Reuben Sims had died by 14 Mar 1835 when a court order was issued that Abner Sims, Edward Ambler, George M Parsons, Absalom Estes & John Racer or any three of them were to appraise the personal estate of Reuben Sims dec'd. On 23 Mar 1836 E Ambler , Abner Sims & A Estes reported the appraisement & inventory of Mar 16 -tools, live stock, etc., total valuation $162.67. Jno P. E. Ambler was the administrator of the estate of Reuben Sims dec'd. The list of purchasers at the estate sale included: Coleman Sims (Abner Sims security), Benjm Fincham, Nancy Sims, Joel Sims, William Sims, A. Estes, etc. Total 166.01. The settlement of the estate mentions "cash pd H G Moffett Atty for Lt in Reuben & Thomas Sims vs Sims admr -his fee & clerk's fee in said suit 19.94. Report: 1 Nov 1846, bal due est. 129.84 prin.;38.76 int. Judgments for larger amounts. Report Included: 21 May 1839 By cash of John Covington Excr or admr of Lucy Sims $100.00.
