Notes
a. Note:   Buried at Aristes Cemetery, Conyngham Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, date of death March 22, 1896, date of birth August 14, 1825. (1)
He was "agent of mining companies, P.O. Centralia, Pennsylvania. He was born in Northumberland County August 14, 1825, a son of William and Sarah (Wetzel) Goodman. When William had reached the age of about five years he moved with his mother to Columbia County, where she died March 15, 1882. William was reared in that county and on the 23rd of January, 1845, married Miss Ruthana LeVan, a native of Columbia County, and a daughter of Daniel Sr. and Elizabeth (Houck) LeVan. Both died in this county, the former in 1863 and the latter about 1873. Mr. and Mrs Goodman were the parents of nine children: Elizabeth, married to Ira Roadermel; Daniel, married to Harriet Person; Benjamin, married to Mary Harris; Isaac, married to Amanda Moyer; Christiana, married to Jerry George; Catherine, married to Levi George; Ira; William; and Henry Clinton. In 1869 Mr. Goodman was given charge of the coal companies in Conyngham Township by the coal and mining companies, and in 1878 he was given charge of all repairs and buildings on the public roads. Mr. and Mrs. Goodman were members of the Presbyterian Church in Locust Township." (2)
William and Ruthana were members of St. Paul's Union Lutheran and Reformed Church in Numidia in Columbia County according to baptism records from1845 through 1867. It is interesting that their names were recorded as parents and sponsors with very different variations, evidently due to Pennsylvania Dutch attempts to relate to German. In 1845 they were Wilhelm and Rosina Goodman, in 1847 William and Sussana Goodman, in 1849 William and Susanna Guthman, in 1852 William and Susanna Gutman, in 1855 William and Rosina Gutman, in 1858 William and Rosina Goodman, in 1860 William and Rosina Gutmann, in 1862 back to William and Rosina Goodman, which held up from then on. Their childrens' names also show variations from other records: Wilhelm for son William, Christian for daughter Christina, Heinrich Clinton for son Henry Clinton, and Catharina for daughter Catherine. A daughter Joan is recorded as born August 25, 1852 and baptized September 30, 1852. This may be a mistake, since Joan is otherwise unknown in other family histories. This may actually be their son Isaac. (3)
In 1850, William Goodman, age 26, occupation shoemaker, lived in Roaring Creek Township in Montour County. Place of birth was not noted. Living in the household were his wife Rosanna age 25, son William age 4, daughter Elizabeth age 3, and son Daniel age 9 months. (4)
