Note: Tax records for Northumberland County in 1826 show a William Goodman living in Upper Mahanoy Township on 17 acres. (1)
On November 6, 1828, Daniel Hilbush was appointed administrator by the probate court for deceased William Goodman, the widow having first renounced, sureties were Lewis Dewart and Abraham McKinney. (2)
On November 17, 1829, in response to a petition by administrator Daniel Hilbush, the Orphan's Court of Northumberland County noted that William Goodman had died without a will, "seized" of property in Upper Mahanoy Township containing 17 acres, 76 perches, upon which had been erected a small log house and a small log barn. William was survived by his widow Sarah and four minor children Benjamin, Isaac, William, and Sarah, all minors under the age of 14 years. The value of the property and improvements was considered to be insufficient for the payment of William's debts. The court ordered public sale of the land and premises for the payment of debts and maintenance and education of the minor children. In three subsequent actions recorded through April 20, 1830 on pages 201, 205, and 212 of Volume 7 of Orphan's Court Dockets, the sale was documented and $38.16 was granted to Sarah Goodman for the care and education of the children for seven years.
