Note: as, Susan was 16 years old at the time. This would make her birth date in the year 1844. The previous census of 1850 in Miliam County Texas shows her as Susanna at age 8 born in Arkansas. This would indicate her birth year was 1842. The family is not found on a Texas census in 1870.
From this it can be assumed that, because John was in the military, he and Susannah relocated from eastern Tn to a military post in Ar, possibly Ft. Smith, as no later than 1842 when Susan was born. It can also be assumed that at some time between 1842 and 1849 Susannah had died when John married Minerva because Susan was still with her father during the 1850 census in Texas.

book says that James and Susan were married twice. Marriage #1,December
1863; and marriage #2, February 18, 1872. The first marriage was probably
outside of the Cherokee Nation and the second marriage under Cherokee law.
