  Listed in McApines Saint John City Directory 1871-1872 as a painter boarding in his father’s home at 31 South Wharf, Saint John.

 “ O.R.S. Isbister, House, Ship, Sign, and Ornamental Painter, Nos 53 and 57 Dock St.. The late Jas. Isbister, Esq., a native of Scotland, began the Painting business in St. John about 30 years ago, and gained a large share of ship and house work by reason of his skill and trustworthiness. At the death of Mr. Isbister his son Oswald R.S. Isbister, who had managed the concern seven years for his father, became proprietor, and has continued the business on his own account with increasing activity and success until the present time. Sign and Ornamental Painting are carried on in a large workroom and many of the handsomest Signs in the City, and the most artistically painted Ship’s Medicine Chests, have been done here.
 “House work, of every kind, is given special attention, the best workmen being employed under the personal supervision of the proprietor, and every effort being made to give perfect satisfaction to the the most critical taste. Mr. Isbister has had no fewer than 350 customers in this class of work, which is sufficient proof of the skill and faithfulness with which he executes the commissions with which he is entrusted.
 “An examination of Mr. Isbister’s book shows that he and his father had charge of the painting, gilding, and graining fo one hundred and six vessels. Among this large number are many fo the finest ships that were ever built in this port -ships that would favorably compare for the beauty and taste of their interior finish and decoration with any in the world. Mr. Isbister’s reputation in this branch of his business is unsurpassed by that of any other man in the profession, and he continues to lead all his numerous rivals.
 “An idea of the extent of his business may be formed from the fact that even at this exceptionally dull period Mr. Isbister has 25 workmen on his staff. The Paint Shop is next to the room especially devoted to Sign and Ornamental work, and on the lower flat is a salesroom and office, the building being situated on one of the best locations in the City. Paints, Oils, Glass, Putty, Varnishes, Gold Leaf, and all the requisites for Painter’s use, arre kept aon hand, and may be obtained at the lowest market rates. Pictures and Picture Frames are also kept in stock.
  Listed in McApines Saint John City Directory 1874-1875 as Oswald R.S., house and sign painter, 53 Dock St., boards at Isbister House.
 On June 20, 1877, the business was burnt out on Dock St. in the Great Fire, as was Isbister House, their hotel.
 Listed in McApines Saint John City Directory 1879-1880 as Oswald R.S., painter, at 39 Leinster St.
 Same for 1880-1881.
 The 1883 Boston Directory lists him (home) at 1202 Harrison Ave,, painter.
  The 1889 Boston Directory lists him as painter (Bruce & Isbister) 205 Commercial, home at 41 Camden [Melrose}
  The 1912 Brookline Direcory lists him with a large ad: O.R.S. Isbister, House sign and Decorative painter, 9-11 Boyston St., Brookline Mass., home at Alston.
  Became a naturalized citizen of U.S in 1924: Oswald Ruthven Scott Isbister, residence 617 South St., Ros.(sic) Massachusetts. Place of birth Feb 22nd 1849 St. John N.B. occupation Painter. Name of wife Phebe, Date of admission March 17, 1924.
  The 1900 U.S. census shows him living in Boston at 23 Stanwood St. as follows: Oswald Isbister, born Feb. 1850, age 50, married 28 years, immigrated to U.S. in 1882, occupation house painter. Also Phebe J., wife, born Sept 1849, age 50, married 28 years, mother of 2 children. also Edna M., daughter, born Nov. 1879, age 20, born in Canada, immigrated to U.S. 1882.
  The 1910 U.S. Census shows him living in Boston at 336 Devon St., age 59, married 39 years, immigrated to U.S. 1882, painter, signs. also Phebe J., age 58, mother of 2 children. also Eleanor M., daughter, age 27, single, artist, at home.
  Listed in the 1920 U.S. census in Boston, 617 South St., rented house, age 70, immigrated to U.S. 1873, born Canada, father and mother born in Canada, occupation house painter. Living with wife Phebe J. aged 71, immigrated to U.S. 1879, born in Canada, father and mother born in Canada.
  Death Registration: Oswald R.S. Isbister, date of death 14 May 1925 at Hart Hospital, Boston Residence at death 617 South St. Boston, married, occupation sign painter, Birthplace St. John N.B.. Immediate cause of death Perforated duodenal ulcer, due to General Peritonitis, due to bronchopneumonia. Father: James Isbister, birthplace Scotland. Mother Mary (last name not given) Her birthplace not given.
