Note: Was probably the first of the Rose-Silva family to come to California. Census recoreds show he immigrated to the US as both 1854 and 1860, and his death certificate shows that he lived somewhere else in the US before coming to California. According to his death notice in the Siskiyou News, he was in the Civil War. (1861-April 1865). Probably came to CA around 1865-1868. When he came to CA he settled in the Azores-Portuguese community of Hawkinsville. His ranch is still owned by the Silva family. Joseph spent his first ten or twenty years gold mining, and later ranching which he continued until his death. In 1910, at the age of 70 the US census shows he was an "employer" and living with his youngest son Johnny, who was 16. Joseph died of chronic bronchitis. His death certificate was completed by another son, Frank. Was survived by 10 of his children.
