Note: BIOGRAPHY: http://www.behindthename.com/name/erastus ERASTUS Gender: Masculine Usage: Biblical Pronounced: i-RAS-t?s (English) Latinized form of the Greek name (Erastos) meaning "beloved". This was the name of an assistant of Paul mentioned in Acts and two epistles in the New Testament. BIOGRAPHY: (As told to Tobi Shields by Alton Shields, October 2003) - Ollie's siblings included brothers George Ville (oldest), Tress, Herman "Sparky" (nickname due to his reddish complexion), and a sister Myrtle Carpenter. (11/03 T. S. discovered Myrtle to be a half sister to Ollie, she was the daughter of Eliza Jane's second marriage to a Samuel Cherry) - Ollie's father was named Granville Eakles, mother was Eliza Jane Shields who later married Samuel Cherry. - At about age 20 Ollie went to Illinois where his brother George was working for a logging company (could not recall name, said it was "next to a big river where they floated logs") - Two to three years after his stint at the Illinois logging compnay, Ollie went to work for Frisco Railroad in Texas. George bought a farm in Oklahoma. - Ollie was deputized by the Napa Sheriff's department during World War II while he was employed as a security guard at Kaiser/Basalt. (As told to Tobi Shields by Reba Shields Bradley - 10/9/04) Ollie and family left Oklahoma for Napa, CA in November 1942. Ollie had been diagnosed with heart disease by a doctor in Oklahoma and told that he would never be able to work again. Roy Shields who was already living in Napa, told Ollie that he was going to move the family out to Napa where Roy could take care of them. Once in Napa, Ollie was diagnosed as having pyorrhea of the gums, not heart disease. He resumed working, taking a job at Syar. After Pearl's death in 1959, Ollie began dating daughter Reba Shields Lollis's mother in law knowing that they were related by marriage.
