S. by Alton Shields, October 2003) - A few days before his death on 30 Dec 1953, Herman and his sixteen year old son went hunting in Petaluma, CA. As they were driving back home to Richmond, his son at the wheel, their care hit the back of a parked logging/lumber truck parked on the side of the road. Herman was asleep in the passenger seat. He was nearly decapitated by the impact. Herman was taken to a Sonoma County hospital where he died a few days later on 30 Dec 1953. He was buried in San Bruno, CA.
