He enrolled at Smith County, Tennessee on March 8, 1864, as a private in B.J. Cooper's Company (F), 1st Regiment, Mounted Infantry, and was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on May 16, 1865. Joseph's personal description at time of enlistment was: Height 5' 11"; Complexion Dark; Eye Color Hazel; Hair Color Black; Occupation Farmer; Born August 16, 1837, Jackson County, Tennesee. Joseph's military service "Declaration For Pension" noterized July 8, 1920; stamped by the "Civil War Division" July 15, 1920; stamped by the "U. S. Pension Office" July 13, 1920 describes his health as "Defective hearing and eye-sight, general debility due to age. Information for Joseph's ancestory and family are included in a list of family members from the family Bible that was Noterized on January 4, 1913; a letter from the "Department of the Interior; Bureau of Pensions" dated January 2, 1915, requesting information which was completed, signed and dated April 5, 1915, and stamped by the "U. S. Pension Office" April 7, 1915; a letter from the "Department of Commerce; Bureau of the Census dated October 18, 1915 and stamped by the "Civil War Division" October 20, 1915, identifying his family in the 1850 & 1860 U.
