Statement Read at naming of Memorial Green, Fairfield.
"Good Morning, Ladies and Gentlemen, Fellow Board of Directors, Life Members and Family of the late Stewart Craig.
I would like to extend a most heartfelt welcome to each and everyone of you here today witnessing this very special occassion. This occassion is the naming of one of the Club's Bowling Greens after the late Stewart Craig.
Stewart was a longstanding member of our Club. He was a respected member of the Board of Directors for 17 years and held the portfolio of Sports Director for 1o of those years. In all the various capacities in which he served our Club, he forever appeared to put the well being of the Club foremost in his mind, as well as his actions. Nothing seemed to be too much effort for him.
He would go out of his way to assist or help anyone who needed or wanted it. He was always prepared to lend his ear to you, whether it was for a chinwag, or because you felt that you just needed someone to either talk to or confide in. Stewart would always be there for you.
During his years as a member of the Club, Stewart and I became very good personal friends, and it never failed to amaze me to discover how many friends Stewart had from various walks of life. Not only did he have these friends, but he was also greatly respected by everyone who ever came into contact with him.
During my term of office as Sports Director of the Club, Stewart was forever telling me of his dream and ambition to start a Bowling Club for Mount Pritchard Community Club members, and it was at this time in 1986, that Stewart, together with Bob Penny, organised a meeting with prospective bowlers, and with the MPCC members who bowled at other venues. Our first Club membership totalled 107 members.
Just to show in how high an esteem Stewart was held by everyone, let me tell all of you gathered here today how the naming of this Green came about.
Knowing how much work and effort Stewart had put into not only getting a Bowling Club for our members but for the Club in General, I mentioned at a Presentation Dinner of the Bowling Club if they had any ideas as to what the Club could do to perpetuate the memory of the late Stewart Craig.
The executive committee and members came up with the fantastic idea of wanting to name one of the Greens in his honour, and here we are today doing just that.
I really wish that Stewart could have been here with us today, but I am sure that right now, wherever he may be, Stewart is looking down upon us, smiling with joy at seeing one of his lifelong ambitions realised.
Well,.... today before us all, is the result of this burning ambition, the Mount Pritchard Bowling Club, and it is with great pride that I on behalf of the MPCC now name this Green the "Stewart Craig Green".
Headstone on Gravesite in Mitchells Island Cemetery reads ... In Loving Memory Of A Dear Father and Grandfather Stewart Kevin Craig Born 1.11.1930 Passed Away 24.03.1994 Aged 63 Years Always in Our Hearts.
