Note: Baptized Franz Gregor Bauer on May 8, 1843 at Sankt Johannes Der Taeufer, Altkrautheim, Weurttemberg, Germany. Witness to baptism was Franz Stelzrauer(??), a mason of Altkrautheim. Franz Gregor Bauer (AKA Frank G. Bauer) came to the United States with his parents in 1847 or 1848. Early City of Pittsburgh directories (1860) show that a "Frank Bauer" was working as a bar keeper and boarding at St. Nicholas Hotel. He was not recorded living at his father's residence in 1860. Subsequent city directories listed a FG Bauer as a clerk, living in Reserve Twp. (1862-3); a Frank Bauer as a bookkeeper, living in Reserve Twp. (1863-66); Frank Bauer as a shipping clerk living at Liberty near East Lane, Allegheny (1867-8). By the time of the 1869-70 directory, FG Bauer was listed as a clerk, living at Liberty near East Lane. The 1870 census of the U.S. listed him with wife and child and indicated that he had attended school within the year. By the mid-1870's, he was employed by Joseph Lautner & Company, a wholesale dealer in special builders hardware, iron, glass, blacksmith, saddlers, and wagon makers supplies. Married in St. Mary's Church, Allegheny City, Pa. Witnesses were Fredrick Buschmann (probably AKA Frederick Bussmann) and Erasmy Hoeveler. Given name was recorded as Franz in church records. By the early 1880's, the family had grown to five children and Frank's brother-in-law, Frederick J. Bussmann, artist and music teacher, was also living with the family at 100 Avery. Perhaps it was during this period that daughter Stella developed the interest in music which led her to a career as a music teacher. Frederick Bussmann continued living with the Bauer family, even after they moved to 17 Washington in the late 1880's and apparently stayed with them until his death in the late 1890's. Frank Bauer remained with Joseph Lautner & Company until the early 1890's when he formed his own business, Bauer, Shaffer & Company, and was engaged in the sale of agricultural implements from 73 Ohio. Son Augustus Frederick was employed by the business. By 1896, the company, still at 73 Ohio, was known as FG Bauer & Son. Frank was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy Hill Rd. Pittsburgh on Jan. 19, 1899. Notes: his grave marker shows 1842-1899 which would be consistent with the age shown in the 1880 census but inconsistent with the age shown in the 1870 census and inconsistent with church records. Death certificate shows birthplace as "City", referring to the city of Allegheny. Son's death certificate shows Frank G.'s birthplace as Pennsylvania. Both are incorrect as he was born in Germany. The following obituary appeared in The Pittsburgh Press on January 17, 1899: "Frank G. Bauer, a prominent resident of the Fourth ward, Allegheny, died at his residence, 17 Washington street. He had been ill for some time and his death was due to dropsy. The deceased was formerly in the hardware business, but retired several years ago. His wife and several grown children survive him. Mr. Bauer was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic church, from which place the funeral will take place Thursday morning at 9:30".
