Note: I have no verification that Martha W. Tharp is the sister to John P. Tharp. While searching for John on the 1870 census, I found him listed in Ada county, Idaho Territory (Unknown Township-Post office in Boise City). June 18, 1870 Dwelling #12 Tharp (looks like Thorp), John, 34, M, W, Blacksmith, New York Tharp,(looks like Thorp, Martha A., 36, F, W, without occupation, New York Jewel, Edward S, 24, M, W, Blacksmith, Wisconsin Jewel, Mary A., 21, F, W, housewife, Missouri Jewel, William E., 1, M, W, Idaho Territory I briefly considered that Martha might have been a first wife to John, but decided against it. It seems more logical that they were brother and sister, being close in age and born in the same location. As soon as I searched for information matching her name, I found a marriage record listed in the Westsern States Marriage Index for Rufus Emery and Martha W. Tharp dated Dec. 14, 1870 in Ada county, Idaho. I am attempting to locate that record from Ada county. I found Rufus and Martha listed on the 1880 census in Payette Valley, Ada county, Idaho, with several boarders. One of them was Henry Cole, which connects back to John P. Tharp. Documents found at the Payette county courthouse show that Henry Cole died in May of 1891 and with no known living relatives, left all of his land and possessions to the four minor children of John P. Tharp, with John listed as executor. Another document shows a petition for a new executor since John P. Tharp had died and the probate of Henry Cole needed to be completed. By this time Martha and Eva, daughters of John P. Tharp, were already married. After not being able to uncover any record of Rufus and Martha on the 1900 census, I did more marriage searching. I found a marriage record for a James E. Harrington and Martha E. Emery dated June 26, 1883 in Ada county, Idaho. Both show their residence as the Lower Payette Valley. While researching additional information on James and Martha, I found a posted obit for James W. Harrington and realized Martha was not his wife at the time of his death. I checked Payette county cemetery records and found Martha Harrington, born July 4, 1836 and died Nov. 8, 1892. She is buried at Riverside cemetery in Payette, Idaho. The Family Tree Maker pedigree file I found lists William Tharp, Sr., and Martha Unknown as the parents of John P. Tharp. No other children are listed. The contributor lists a birth date for Martha as WFT Est. 1796-1820 and a death date as April 18, 1884 in Ada county, Idaho. The contributor lists a death date for her husband William Tharp, Sr. as WFT Est. 1840-1902 in Ada county, Idaho, and a birth date of 1811 in England. The interesting part of the submission is that the contributor also lists a marriage between Martha (John's mother) and James Harrington, with a date given as WFT Est. 1825-1859 in Ada county, Idaho. I will be furiously attempting to verify any and all leads and information.
